About the Brand
Valentino Garavani opened his first workshop in Rome in 1959. His first collection focused on precious materials and flamboyant colours. Red Valentino, the powerful, bright, poppy red appeared for the first time on the catwalk. In 1960 he partnered with Giancarlo Giammetti. This was the beginning of a long partnership. The first collection of the brand was presented in 1964. Success was instantaneous. Jackie Kennedy wanted to change her wardrobe and asked Valentino. The awards were not long in coming. Valentino Garavani received the Neiman Marcus Award. The monogram became a key element of the brand. The years 1970 and 1980 were spent launching new lines of ready-to-wear for men and women. The brand also developed a range of accessories. The first fragrance was also developed. Valentino Garavani chose to leave the world of fashion in 2007, during a big fashion show in Paris that celebrated his 45 year career.
Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli both studied fashion design at the European Institute of Design in Rome. They met later at Fendi, where they worked for ten years. This foundational experience forged their intense professional relationship. Their stylistic approach is defined by their sense of contemporary, fed contrasts and a love for mixing artistic and visual impulses concentrated in a bright and unique style. In 1999, Valentino Garavani asked to create a line of accessories capable of interpreting the style of the Valentino brand. Chiuri and Piccioli were passionate about this new challenge, which offered them the chance to work with a master of Italian haute couture. They first devised accessories in a highly distinctive glamor, which reflected the care provided by Valentino to the finishing each of the creations. In September 2007, following the decision of Mr Valentino to retire from the fashion world, the duo were named head of the artistic direction for the accessory line. The success of the fresh and original style of the Roman duo has emerged over the years, meeting the unanimous approval of the main figures in the world of fashion.
